White petrolatum is a semi-solid mixture of various hydrocarbons obtained from petroleum after decolorization. It is slightly soluble in ether and almost insoluble in ethanol or water.

White petrolatum is mostly used as ointment matrix in many pharmaceutical formulations (especially ointments) and accounts for a high proportion. It can affect the rheological properties of the paste, so it is a very important excipient.
